Mr Cowell.
I spoke to the Secretary of State about this, and he would be rather glad if you would lay this matter specially before your Committee and obtain their views as to the issue of a School Medal of the class proposed in this despatch, quite irrespective of any other medals that may be authorised during the Coronation. You will see that a tele- graphic reply is wanted and we ought in a few days to settle
one way or another.

There was no suggestion
that special sanction would be needed for striking
this Medal for school children and you will see what
Mr. Earle says as to the impossibility of the Queen
choosing the ribbon. This last is the only point at
which it touched a general question of Coronation
Medals.
I think it improbable that any concerted
action can be taken by the Colonies over a school
medal; it is really too late to think about it
it fer anck 22/unl; Be it would perhaps not be very
acceptable to aimentimesgaber formal consideration,
and the convey
a decision after the Coronation.
On the whole this matter comes down to the
question whether the Department will authorize or not.
Comunitta Personally I should leave it open to the to do as
they like as long as they have the money.
But the
question of a stamp must be sat upon at once. It
is against all our principles.
